

Here is a picture of scowling Jason Varitek. Basically I just tried to remove the shadow caused by the light and his helmet. I managed to lighten up the shadow but had a hard time hiding the line from where the transition had been. The tutorial makes it look much easier than it actually is.

I find the dodge and burn tool tricky myself. I usually end up using levels because I find it so much easier. But I really like the after picture much better because you can see the subjects eyes more easily.
I tried to go the "removing shadows from face" route and gave up. I kept over using the tool to the point of removing detail. You can definitely see more in your adjusted photo, but I see what you mean about the line.

And Jay is right the more you use the tool the more detail you lose.
