Here are a couple of photos that I modified. The first one I selected half the photo and adjusted the lighting and color to see what it would gain me...I have to say it looks quite a bit better. The second one I did the same thing with selecting half of the photo but this time I converted it to black and white. I don't think the conversion really added too much to the shot.

I like that you split the photos in half like that. Although you make it sound like you did it for practical reasons, it's visually quite interesting to look at from a creative stand point as well.
I like how you only adjusted half of each photo; it's in the same style of my cat photos taken under different light bulbs.
I agree that the first attempt benefited the photo and the second did not so much.
Splitting the shots was agood idea. I enjoy the difference in the first shot. It looks natral and un played with.
Yes very good idea as you can compare and contrast what you altered. The first photo did make a noticeable difference. The black and white one I like because it has contrast which is what makes a good black and white photo.
